It is with such heavy sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Tom O’Handley on Thursday, August 15th, 2024 in Halifax. Born and raised in the community of Table Head, Glace Bay Nova Scotia, Tom eventually made his way to Halifax where he settled down and called it home. Always a proud Table Header, he took every opportunity to visit and share stories about his wonderful community.
He is survived by his beloved and treasured son Ellis O’Handley, his wife Heather Nabuurs and his sister Jennifer O’Handley as well as so many wonderful cousins, relatives and friends who have become family.
He is predeceased by his parents Tommy and Lillian (Bubby) O’Handley (nee Smith)
Tom left an impact on everyone he met. He was a friend to so many and was determined to spread kindness and joy in whatever he did. He was generous, never missing the opportunity to give, he was hilarious and so incredibly quick witted. He listened without judgement and when he spoke up people listened. He was known for his basketball talent and his love for the game. He was a proud SMU Alumni and enjoyed volunteering and supporting the university that gave him so much.
Tom’s goal in life was to be the best possible father and partner, and what an incredible Dada and husband he was. He said I love you like it was his job, hugs were given like a daily dose of vitamin. Everyone knew about his “guy” and if you were lucky enough to run into the two of them someplace with a shopping cart, the squeals of laughter said it all, Dada loved his little boy so much and that feeling was reciprocated. Love was what he put out into the world and love was what he received tenfold in return.
He was the light of our lives and suddenly it feels like the sun has clouded over. As his family, we ask that you pass on a little spark of Tom, more light, more laughter, and a whole lot more love.
Our family would like to express our heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported us through such a difficult time, we appreciate every one of you.
A Celebration of Tom’s Life will be held at J.A Snow Funeral home 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Friday, August 23rd at 2pm with reception to follow. Live stream of the service will be available.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Tom’s memory can be made to his son Ellis through The Ellis O’Handley Fund ([email protected]).
