It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Theresa Ella Marie Landry, of Halifax, on Sunday, August 26, 2018. Theresa was born on May 22, 1933. She died in her home at age 85 with family by her side.
Theresa was predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, Capt. Basil (Baz) Landry, M.B., of the former Halifax Fire Department, who died in 2006, at age 73. Theresa, the youngest member of her family, is the final of her four siblings and parents to pass away. She adored her mother, Domithilde (Tillie) Bochoff, of Cape Breton, and her father, Vasil Bochoff, of Bulgaria. Vasil was one of several immigrants to Canada/Halifax from Bulgaria who started the IPC grocery store chain.
Theresa is survived by her only child, Janice Landry, her son-in-law, Robert Dauphinee, and her only grandchild, Laura Dauphinee. Laura is starting university this fall. We know how proud “Nana Theresa” was of Laura, the light of her life. Janice’s mother-in-law, Betty Dauphinee, remains a constant source of support. Theresa’s devoted niece, Theresa (Schnare) Brow, always helped nurture her namesake aunt.
Theresa loved flowers. She was a gifted gardener. She passed on her green thumb to Janice. Theresa loved sports, especially baseball and the Toronto Blue Jays. She worked part-time as a school crossing guard, a CIBC bank teller, and was also an employee of People’s Jewellers. Theresa dressed-to-the-nines for her customers.
She was one of Janice’s biggest supporters – in terms of her work as a journalist and author. Theresa attended all of Janice’s book launches and would even talk to strangers about her daughter and her work. Theresa Landry was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother.
Theresa’s wake will be held Thursday, August 30, from 5-8pm, at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Her funeral is 10am, Friday, August 31, at St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax. Cremation will have taken place. Father Paul Morris officiating. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery, Lower Sackville.
Janice and her family are deeply grateful to Dr. Lorne Marsh and his staff for their unwavering care of Theresa over many years. We are also thankful for the support and love we are now receiving, and that Theresa is now at peace, no longer suffering, and finally reunited with her beloved Baz.
