Sophia MacInnis, age 10, of Lower Sackville, NS passed away at home on May 6th, 2023 in the loving arms of her Mommy and Daddy. Born in Halifax on October 17, 2012, she came two weeks early and was almost born in the hallway, because that’s how she rolled. She continued that fast pace throughout her life, never walking but always running. Sophia always marched to the beat of her own drum. She would do anything for anyone and was a friend to all. She loved both her friends and family so fiercely. She tried all sports but loved gymnastics. Some of her favourite things were camping, vacationing in Cape Breton, gaming, dancing, fishing, cooking and all things “Stitch” and “Stranger Things”.
Sophia had a heart of gold, almost to a fault. It may have gotten her into the middle of a few situations. She was also the most stubborn person we ever met. You could not tell her she couldn’t do something, she would always find a way. Sophia loved to push the limits and was responsible for more than a few gray hairs! She was a lover of animals especially her own: Wally, Doug, Maisie and Squishy. Sophia could do anything she put her mind to. She attended school at Cavalier Drive Elementary in Lower Sackville where she should have been completing her final year before moving to junior high. She missed seeing her friends and teachers so much and was able to visit them one last time and bring treats for them just a little over a week before she passed.
In August 2022 Sophia was diagnosed with a form of terminal childhood brain cancer called DIPG. She faced her illness head on and never felt sorry for herself. She captivated people all over the world with her strength and positivity. We were able to travel to Orlando where she spent her 10th birthday in Harry Potter World getting her own special wand at Ollivander’s. Throughout her illness she always wanted to give back to people. She would always put others before herself and would choose to go without if it meant someone in need wouldn’t have to. Our days were filled with so much love and laughter. What we wouldn’t give to hear her say “I love you” so I could reply “that’s the best part of my day’.
Sophia will be forever missed by her Mommy and Daddy (Amy and Ian) and her sisters Mya and Isla. She also leaves behind her Nanny and Poppy (Linda and Sonny MacDougall) and her Grammy and Grampy (Bonnie and Calder MacInnis), Great Grandmother Nanny Colleen Beaton (Willard), Aunts and Uncles: Amanda (Adam), Brad, Chris (Mandie), Catherine (Kris) as well as cousins Christopher, Emerald, Aylee, Rowan and Olivia. She also leaves behind a large extended family, a large group of friends and Natalie, Aaron, Quinn and Kenley Frausell who she considered to be family. Lastly, Sophia leaves behind her best friends Quinn, Trin and Alex who she said she would miss so much.
We would like to thank the Oncology team on 6N and the Palliative care team at the IWK for all of your care over the last nine months. We would also like to thank Dr. Korones in Rochester, NY who accepted Sophia into a clinical trial and gave us a little bit of hope when we thought there was none. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada https://www.braintumour.ca/ to help with severely underfunded pediatric brain tumor research. Celebration of life will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax at 2pm Saturday May 13th. Reception to follow. Please wear cheerful colors to honor Sophia’s shining personality
