SMITH, Sidney - 87, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2024 at Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Building. Born on March 14, 1937, he was the eldest child of the late John Duncan and Stella May Smith.
He is survived by his brother Stephen (Lisa) McHattie, Puslinch, ON; nieces Gillian (Costa) Smith, Kelda Smith, Isobel McHattie and Tessa McHattie; nephews Marcus (Amanda) Gursky and Duncan McHattie; great-niece Samantha Gursky and great-nephews Julian and Ian Gursky.
He was predeceased by his sister Donna and his brothers John, Wendell and David.
In 1953, at the age of 16, Sidney began a prestigious career at the Royal Bank of Canada in Wolfville, NS. In 1964, he was transferred to Staff Dept in Toronto. In 1966 he was named Personal Manager in Winnipeg and 4 yrs later, assigned Senior Assistant Inspector in British Columbia. He became Regional Representative in Sydney, Australia in 1975 and in 1978 was appointed Inspector at the head offices in Montreal. 1981 brought him back to Halifax where he became Manager of Commercial Lending and later Manager of the Corporate Banking Centre. In 1989, he became the District Manager of Corporate Lending. After 39 years of service, Sidney retired in April, 1993.
Sidney was an avid golfer and a long time member of Ashburn Golf Club. He was a masterful bridge player and enjoyed a lifelong love of reading. Sidney was a keen sailor and many times travelled to the Caribbean to crew on his friends boats. He was devoted to his family and adored animals. (He was often described by his nieces and nephews as a dog’s best friend). He loved music and singing and was an active member of St John’s United and St Andrew’s United Churches in Halifax. Sidney was much loved by his long time friends and family and was known especially for his unwavering sense of adventure, indomitable love of life and wicked sense of humour.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, August 12th at 5 pm at the Old Ashburn Golf Club, 3250 Joseph Howe Drive, Halifax.
