With sadness, we announce that Shirley Evelyn Lockyer (Boutilier) of Upper Tantallon, NS passed away on June 28, 2023, at the Halifax Infirmary Hospital, she was 77 at the time of her passing. She passed from complications stemming from a stroke and Alzheimer’s. She is survived by her husband of 52 years Frank, her son Sean, her daughter Natasha and granddaughter Carmen, her sister Ruby Webb, brother Daly Boutilier and their children, the children of her deceased brothers Malcolm and Alvin, her husband’s brothers Gregory and Robert Lockyer, sister Sharon Groen and their children.
She was predeceased by her mother and father Odessa and Verner Boutilier of Spry Bay, NS, her in-law parents Douglas and Pauline Lockyer of Dartmouth, NS, as noted her brothers Malcolm and Alvin Boutilier, her nephews Kenneth Webb and Victor Boutilier and her brother-in-law Wynnand Groen.
She had been born and raised in Spry Bay NS, attended Mount St. Vincent University, Halifax, graduating with a Bach. Of Education degree. She taught at the East St. Margarets Elementary, Beechville Lakeside Timberlea Elementary and Upper Tantallon Elementary schools in Halifax County during her career of 33 years.
She loved to travel and was a great planner for these trips. The family traveled throughout the USA and Canada. She loaded up the family, including Pauline Lockyer and family friend Hazel Murphy and flew off to New Zealand and Australia by way of Fiji and Hawaii.
To celebrate her retirement she, her sister Ruby and husband Frank flew off to Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, and France.
She with her sister Ruby and husband Frank piled into their vintage RV and spent 4 months travelling to and around the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Alaska and everywhere in-between in 2006.
She with her husband Frank were a strong supporter of live theatre being an annual subscriber to Neptune Theatre since their marriage in 1971.
Covid as with everyone else stopped her in her tracks, but she was starting to venture forth again doing such things as a monthly dinner with retired teachers/friends whom she had worked with, this was highlight event for her.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral home. A memorial service will be held at Cruikshank’s located at 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, NS (across from Sobeys) on July 11, 2023, at 11:00 am. The service will be officiated by Archdeacon Brieanna Andrews of the Parish of French Village. A reception will follow the service with Tea, coffee and refreshments. Internment will be later with family and friends. Donations may be made to Alzheimer Society or the QEII Foundation.
