With broken hearts, we announce the passing of our sister, aunt and friend, Sharon Margaret McIntyre, at her home on January 6, 2015. Born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Sharon was the youngest daughter of the late Duncan and Thelma (MacLean) McIntyre.
Sharon is survived by her brothers, Bob (Anne) of Petawawa, Duncan of Dartmouth, sisters, Louise (Moody MacLean) and Shelia (Robert Johnston) of Glace Bay; also her nieces, Patty (Norlock) and Kim (Leadbeater) and nephews, Keith (McNeil), Scott and Ian (Johnston), John, Brian, Paul, and Jamie (MacLean). She was predeceased by her sister, Doreen; brother in-law, Donald McNeil and her nephew, Rob McIntyre. An exceptional sister, she was second mom to all of her nieces and nephews.
A 1972 graduate of St. Rita’s School of Nursing (Sydney), Sharon began her career at Camp Hill Hospital (Halifax), and in 1974, joined the staff of the Izaak Walton Killam Hospital for Children (IWK). In 1979, Sharon found her life’s true passion when she accepted a position in cardiology at the Children’s Cardiac Heart Centre, where she spent the balance of her career guiding the growth of the department, mentoring of new nursing staff, new physicians and helping anyone else her life touched. Sharon was on the founding Board of Directors of the Brave Heart Support Group, founder of Heart Talk, was involved with the Children’s Wish Foundation, and was recipient of the Margaret Ross Award in 2000 for Outstanding Service for Maritime Children, Women and Families. Sharon was clinical leader of the Cardiac Care Team at the Children’s Heart Centre until her Retirement in 2012.
Respecting Sharon’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held 2 PM Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, 902-455-0531 with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, Sharon has requested memorial donations be made to the Pediatric Cardiology Department of the IWK.
