POWELL, Ronald Cecil (Ron)born in Moser River, NS on June 14, 1926 to the late Ralph and Eugenia (Fancy) Powell. Died on February 8, 2016 in Halifax Infirmary. Ron was educated in the local and Halifax School system. Volunteered for service in the Canadian Army at the age of 17 serving in the Infantry, Army Service Corps and finally with the Pictou Highlanders in Sussex, NB until Demobilization in 1946. Returned to a position with DND Halifax Dockyard serving in various management positions including 11 years as manager of the Surface Weapons repair and maintenance facility. Served as President of the Dockyard Management Association and an active member of the DMA. Received a 35 year long service medal at retirement in 1985 after 42 years with DND.
He was a long serving member of the Masonic Order originally Dufferin 89 and currently Fairview 126 in Halifax NS. Received a 65 year jewel in 2013. Served in many offices over the years including District Deputy Grand Master for Halifax County District 1977/78. A member of Scottish Rite & Philae Shriners Oriental Band serving as Treasurer for 15 years. Elected to the office of President of the Northeast Oriental Bands Association for a period of 2 years serving Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States. Also a member .of the Halifax Shrine Club serving as Treasurer for 10 years. Served several years as a member of the Philae Hospital Committee. Also an active member of the Royal Order of Jesters NS Court 155. A charter member of Electa Chapter Order of the Eastern Star formed in 1956, serving as Treasurer for several years and Worthy Patron on four occasions. Appointed Grand Representative to the state of Colorado. Is currently a member of Armcrest Chapter #42 Halifax. One of the founding members of Fairview Legion 142 and a cosigner of the mortgage on the new building constructed in 1955.
Ron and wife Alice and family and friends have spent many happy years at their cottage on Little Mush-a-Mush Lake in Middle Cornwall NS. They also enjoyed traveling the world and spent many enjoyable winters in Florida, also cruise ship voyages and trips to Europe, the U.K. and Asia. Vancouver was a frequent destination to spend time with family and friends. Ron and Alice celebrated their 63rd wedding Anniversary May 23, 2015
Ron is survived by his loving wife Alice (Conrad), Daughter Anne Boutilier (Eric), Sons Gary (Kathy), Mark (Rose), Sister Phyllis Poole (Harry) all of Halifax and Sister Isobel Haley of Barrie, ON. Also Survived by Granddaughters Jennifer and Terri Boutilier (Tim Power), Grandsons Jason and Lucas Powell and Great Grandchildren Brandon and Olivia Power. Predeceased by Brother Edwin. Cremation has taken place and there will be a visitation from 6 to 8 pm at Snow’s Funeral Home, Lacewood Dr, Halifax on Thurs, Feb 11th. Funeral service at Calvin Presbyterian Church, Fri, Feb 12th at 11 am.
