Roberta Ann Morrison

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on January 1st, 1959 to Arnold Ruggles Kelley and Mary Ida Kelley (Rutledge). An Alumni of Saint Mary’s University, she married Gerald Morrison on October 6th in 1978, they have 2 children Kaleena and Brandon.

She is predeceased by her parents Arnold and Mary, and siblings Marcella Davis, John and Douglas Bezanson. She will be eternally missed and forever remembered by her husband Gerald Morrison, siblings Russell, Gordon, Joseph, Janet and Robert, children, Kaleena Kane (Morrison) and Brandon Morrison, sons/daughters in-law Leonard Kane and Brandi Porter, and grandchildren Jade Kane and Fenix Morrison.

Roberta was a staple to the injured worker community throughout the province from Yarmouth to Sydney. She was known by politicians, reporters, unions and non-union organizations and frequently helped injured workers to advocate for payments, pensions, medical aids and other benefits where they were due.

She was a founding member of Halifax Area Injured Workers Group in early 1990’s. After years of being an advocate, Roberta went on to be appointed by the Federation of Labour to sit as a Workers Advocate Member on the NS Workers Compensation Board. While on Board she worked diligently to deliver the injured worker’s perspective to the table when decisions regarding policies were being developed.

Roberta continued her work helping others late into life, she joined Coverdale Justice Society as a manager of the Community Justice Program that helps to support women, youths, and gender diverse individuals inside and outside of the justice system. She passionately helped many individuals in the 5 years she worked for Coverdale.

She was a proud, kind-hearted woman that believed in respect for yourself and for others, someone who would give you the shirt off her back even if only to help out a little bit. Roberta was an avid golfer and played tournaments with the Black Education Association, The Honey Bee’s, and Ladies Social Golf League, her home club was Indian Lake and she prided herself on the love of the game.

Be it the Holidays or vacations she loved to spend time with her family and seeing her grandchildren, traveling to Vancouver and finding peace in the time she had with them at Green Lake. Always the head chef when it came time to cook family meals, she made sure everyone’s hearts and bellies were full of love and food.

She was a certified red seal chef who’s love always shone through her cooking, especially her famous seafood chowder. Roberta’s cooking was honed as a service manager with Via Rail Canada for over 20 years, she was also owner of Bert’s Diner and worked in developing Black Bear Gourmet Ice Cream on the Halifax Waterfront. Her enthusiasm for golf, basketball, tennis, and most other sports could be heard throughout the household. Roberta had a green thumb and every spring she could be found planting and caring for her garden.

Always an advocate for those in need and never afraid to speak her mind, she continued to work until her voice went silent on September 25, 2024.

Celebration of life to honor Roberta Ann Morrison will be held on October 20th, 2024 at 1:00pm – 4:00pm. The location will be the Lord Nelson Hotel,1515 South Park Street, Halifax, in the Imperial Ballroom. The family welcomes all who have known Roberta to come and pay respects and share kind words. Parking is available along with bus routes to Spring Garden and South Park Street.
