As a young man Carson was employed as Foreman of the Plumbing Department at the Halifax School Board. While working with the school board he received his GED through adult education. He then went to Saint Marys University (part time) where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1980. Carson then retired from the school board and attended Atlantic School of Theology earning a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained into the Anglican Church and became Rector of the Parish of Ship Harbour in 1985 which encompassed Ship Harbour, Owls Head, Jeddore and Upper Lakeville until his 1st retirement in 2003. Not one to sit idle Carson then became the Rector of the Parish of Rawdon until he officially retired.
Carson was a lifelong volunteer. Early in his life he was involved in Air Cadets and scouting. He joined Ad Astra Lodge in 1967 and became a Master of the Lodge as well as a Knight of the Royal Order of Scotland. He was also the Lodge Chaplain. He was a member of the Bedford Legion where he also served as Chaplain and was a regular participant in the annual Titanic and Remembrance Day services, as well as a staunch supporter of their Poppy Campaign. However, his true passion was the Fire Service. Over the years, while working, he was a member of the Armdale, Fairview, Sackville and Oyster Pond Volunteer Fire Departments. He inaugurated The Chaplains Service in the Halifax Fire and Emergency Service under Fire Chief Mike Eddy. He was also involved in Critical Incident Stress debriefing and travelled all over the province to speak with firefighters who had been involved in tragic situations. He volunteered in the Fire Service for 71 years, always willing to go where needed and lend a helping hand. He also was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth’s II Golden Jubilee Medal presented by the Governor General of Canada in 2002.
Carson was the son of James Albert Baxter and Nellie Victoria Greencorn Baxter. Predeased by his beloved wife Edith Mary, stepfather Jacob Greencorn, brothers James Sturgen, Earl Warner and sister Vera Keating. He is survived by son Peter and his wife Ruth Ann, grandsons James (Alicia) and Mark (Marissa), great grandchildren Callie, Cohen, Quinn, Cooper and Easton, special nieces Mary Kay Boyle and Colleen Nowe, and special great niece Kayla Boyle, as well as additional extended family.
Visitation to be held August 31st from 6:30 till 9:00 pm at All Saints Cathedral. Funeral services to be held Friday September 1st at 2:00 pm at All Saints Cathedral, officiant Bishop Sandra Fyfe. Burial in St. Johns Cemetery, Fairview.
