Born in Estonia, his family came to live in Feltzen South, Nova Scotia after escaping invasion by the Soviets when Paul was just a baby. They travelled at night to Finland on a small fishing boat then lived in Sweden before choosing Canada as their home.
He grew up in the small fishing community of Feltzen South where his father was a fisherman and built boats.
