It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Ora on August 29, 2023. He was born April 26, 1938 in Dominion, Cape Breton. The son of the late, George and Mary (Vanderover) Harkins. He was predeceased by his brother Gary, his first wife Eileen, their only child, a daughter, Amber, who was the light of his life, and his second wife, Donna.
He is survived by his niece Judy (Tony) D'Amicantonio, Montreal, nephew, James (Brenda) Harkins, Hollywood, Florida, grand- niece Marina (Jessie) Victoria, Montreal, grand- nephew David (Valerie) D'Amicantonio, Montreal, great grand nephews and nieces. Two step-children, Kelly Steeves and Michelle Steeves-Wall both from the greater HRM.
Ora came to Halifax at the age of 15 to attend Hight School at St. Mary's University High School. He then took an additional two years of university at St.Mary's before commencing employment with HSBC where he remained for 27 years. After retiring from HSBC, he became an independent financial planner representing The Investors Group/Great West Life for an additional 20 years. During these times he also ran his own business, Harcorp Sales and Service, An appliance sales company and also dabbled in real estate and owned several apartment buildings in Halifax. He resided in Dartmouth, but was also a
summer resident of Hubbard's where he owned a cottage for 38 years. At the age of 70 he moved from Dartmouth, to Tantallon, which he called Paradise and where he truly enjoyed retirement for his remaining years.
He liked meeting new people, getting together with his old guy's gang (some of whom date back to his High School days), for Friday lunches in Dartmouth, And watching political happenings south of the border. He was happy to share his thoughts and expertise in financial matters with the clause "always happy to take a chance with other people's money", which always seemed to work out well. He leaves behind many friends and neighbors who considered him family.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday September 9, 2023 at 2pm in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to IWK Cancer Research.
A private burial in the family plot at Fairview Lawn Cemetery will take place at a later date.
