It is with great sadness that we, the family of Maureen Elizabeth (Dunphy) Oxner announce her passing the morning of January 11th, 2022 at the Halifax Infirmary with family by her side. She was born on December 26th, 1937 and was the only daughter of Francis and Mark Dunphy of Moncton, NB. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Clifford Freeman Jack (Joe) Oxner, son Jonathan, daughter Naomi (Deryck) Richardson and granddaughters, Madelyn and Sarah Richardson.
Maureen was educated in Moncton, NB and worked at a local radio station. She went on to study at St. Francis Xavier University, spending summers in Montreal working for Bell Telephone. She received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Mathematics. She began her career with the Naval Research Establishment in Dartmouth, NS. Here she worked on the Hydrofoil Project (FHE400). This involved taking Alexander Graham Bell’s work and applying her math knowledge for present day use. This also involved working on the first computer in Eastern Canada. It is here that Maureen met Joe and rules stated that one of them had to leave the Establishment if married. It was decided they would marry, design and build their home in Purcell’s Cove and Maureen would further her studies at Dalhousie University and go on to teach math at Halifax West. Maureen remained teaching until she left to raise their two children, Naomi and Jonathan. All while “training” their three Afghan Hounds over the years, Tut, Zephyr, and Ptolemy (Tolly).
She was a member/president of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) and served for the Archdiocese of Halifax. She was also a member of the Scouting community as a leader with the Armdale Troop.
Maureen was always an avid bridge player taking after her parents and many family members. In more recent years she went on to teach again, but this time Bridge at the Chocolate Lake Recreation Center.
Maureen enjoyed spending her summers at their summer home in Cape Brulé, NB. This is where she especially loved to do her entertaining, hosting many family gatherings, friends of her children and lots of bridge parties.
Maureen was a bright light and life of any party. We all enjoyed her presence and will feel a deep void with her passing, but we will take hope that God will welcome her and she can join “The Heavenly Bridge Club”.
