BROWN, LeRoy Maynard – passed away at 95 on Monday, June 11, 2012. He was born in Sydney, N.S. on February 14, 1917, the son of the late William DeBlois and Katie Amelia (Brown) Brown. He and his mother moved to the Brown family home in Boylston, Guysborough County after his father was killed in the Halifax Explosion in December 1917. He was raised by his mother and grandmother. In 1940, he and his wife Effie moved to Halifax where Roy was first employed as a chauffeur for Dr. Judson Graham and was later employed with Imperial Oil for a number of years. Roy was a Volunteer Fireman during the Second World War. In the early 1960’s, he and his family founded and operated Brown’s Oil Delivery and L.M. Brown’s Transport. He retired in 1983. Roy is a 50 year member of Keith Lodge #17, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Also for over 50 years, a member of Philae Temple Shrine and a long time member of the Scooter Patrol and the Royal Order of Jesters. Having brought the Jolly Trolley from Florida, he was a head of the Jolly Trolley Unit for many years. Over the years on his many visits to Boylston, Roy loved to fish and hunt with his friends or just drive through the wooded areas. He loved travelling, especially in his motor home. As a family man, he built or restored all the homes and cottages they continue to enjoy and live in today. Survived by his wife of 74 years, Effie Mae (Carter), daughters Ethelda Elizabeth Burnell (Cyril) and Sheila Francis Hayes (Mike); son Maynard Elliott (Deborah); grandchildren Susan Michelle Garrett (David), Creg Charman Hayes (Brenda), Andrew Maynard Brown and Michael Robert Brown; great-grandchildren Maggie Hayes and Jesse Hayes. Predeceased by an infant brother Earle Maynard in 1915; and daughter (during birth), January 21, 1945. Funeral service will be at 1:30pm, Friday June 15th at the Philae Temple, 3530 Connolly Street, commencing with the Masonic Service, conducted by Keith Lodge #17 followed by the regular service. We welcome friends and family to the reception immediately after. Many thanks to the nurses and doctors of unit 8.2 QEII who were so caring. A very special thanks from our entire family to Dr. Ernest Johnson who cared for Roy faithfully night or day for 51 years as his doctor and friend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Children’s Travel Fund.
Internment will be at 3:00 pm Sunday June 17, 2012 at the Boylston-United Baptist Church Cemetery on East Side Harbour Rd in Boylston, NS.
