Dave passed away peacefully in his 95th year, August 31, 2016 at the Halifax Infirmary, Halifax, Nova Scotia after a brief illness.
He was born in Halifax, the son of Alexander and Bessie Hobrecker and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Dave served with RCAF during the Second World War as a gunnery instructor. He returned from the war and resumed working in the family business Kelly’s Limited which his father had purchased in the 1920’s.
In the 1960’s together with his brother, then later with his son, son-in-law and grandson he saw the family business continue to prosper and grow into a respected and well known retail store for quality and service in Halifax. At its closure in 2014, Kelly’s Ltd., having opened in 1876, was the oldest independent Luggage and Leather goods shop in North America.
Dave was a devoted and loving husband and before Muriel’s untimely death enjoyed many wonderful years at their Porters Lake cottage, curling at the Halifax Curling Club and travelling. He was blessed with having his children and grandchildren nearby and cherished all the special times spent with them. Dave will be remembered for his wit, his wealth of knowledge, love of learning and his generous and kind nature.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Muriel (Bonin) and infant daughter, his parents, brother Alexander and sisters Nancy and Doris.
He is survived by his children Brian (Deborah), Head of St. Margaret’s Bay and Susan (Terry) Fogarty, Halifax.
His grandchildren, Erin, Christopher, Colin and Lauren of whom he was so proud, great granddaughter Allie, sister-in-law, Aletha Johnson and several nieces and nephews.
A reception to celebrate his life will be held at Snows Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, N.S. on Sunday, September 11th from 1:00 – 3:30 pm.
