Born on November 23, 1935 in Steep Creek, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, June was the daughter of the late John Bernard and Dora Mae (Parks) Meagher.
Predeceased by her husband Dr Donald Maxwell Nicholson, and her brothers Francis and Clinton.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Joanne Nicholson (Dr. Andrew Hamilton) Kingston, Ontario, Dr. John Nicholson (Jennifer) Halifax, and Dr. Donna Nicholson (Bruce Fanjoy) Ottawa. She was the proud grandmother to nine grandchildren; Kirsten, Megan, and Erin Hamilton, Rebecca, Rachel, Erica, and Julia Nicholson, and Adrienne and Ben Fanjoy. She is also survived by her sister Alta Flanagan, brother Harold, and many nieces and nephews.
June attended Saint Joseph’s Convent School for Girls, Mabou and Mulgrave High School. She was a graduate of Saint Martha’s Hospital School of Nursing, Antigonish and nursed in Antigonish, Boston, and Halifax. June was a volunteer in many local charities. She was a former Secretary of the Halifax Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses, a member of the Committee of Management for Victoria Hall for Senior Women, Halifax, and a member of the Friends of the Victorian Order of Nurses.
June was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She was extremely proud of her family and never missed a chance to talk about them. June loved time with her friends and was an accomplished bridge player who played regularly over the last 50 years. She loved to tell a good story and chat with everyone she could, including the doctors and nurses of 5A right up until the time of her death.
June was a fighter and battled her cancer with incredible dignity and grace. She overcame numerous obstacles over the last two years and made the most of every day. She played her last round of golf with her son and granddaughter in September of this year.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses for their compassionate care over the last two years especially Dr. Amy Gillis and Dr. Joanna Zed of the Dalhousie Family Practice Group, Dr. Mark Dorreen, Lynn Shore, and the 11th floor nurses of the Oncology Unit, and the doctors and nurses of the Palliative Care Unit of the Victoria General Hospital. A special thank-you to Father Owen Connelly of Canadian-Martyrs’-Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish and to her many friends for their support.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2032 Robie Street, Halifax. Visitation will be held Friday, November 5, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 6th at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Oxford Street, Halifax at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow.
