Born in Halifax on October 25th, 1946, to Alicia (Mont) Wheatley and Herbert F. Wheatley, she was their only daughter. She was raised on Allan Street in Halifax along with her older brother Herbert (Bert) and younger brother, Ross, who has been her primary caregiver in recent years until her hospitalization.
Judith was predeceased by her parents and her infant great niece Naomi Wiegers. In addition to her two brothers, she is survived by her niece Kim (Norman) Wiegers, nephew Mark Wheatley (Kim), and Niece Jodi (Dwayne) Hirtle and her Great Nephews and Nieces: Zachary Hirtle, Noah Wiegers, Maggie Wiegers, Leo Wheatley, Joey Hirtle and Alicia Wheatley.
After completing high-school and post-secondary training, Judith immediately went to work for the Department of Veterans’ affairs at Camp Hill, where she met life-long friends that remained close until her retirement.
In the early 1980’s, Judith took a memorable trip to Hawaii with her mother and, in the 1990’s, she took up Country Line Dancing (even competing at Parlee Beach in New Brunswick where her groups’ performance of “Boot Scoot and Boogie” during a live performance by Brooks and Dunn won the competition). A stress fracture in her foot (brought on by stomping too hard!) brought line dancing to an end, but shortly after she found much joy when she became the proud owner of her first Shih Tzu “Dickens”. “Duchess” and “Diamond” followed quickly after, and she had many loving years with them.
Judith was an avid reader an enjoyed many authors. She had a passion for good music and especially loved Dean Martin. She was a collector of fine pieces of jewelry, many of which, her generous heart prompted her to give away to family and friends. She also enjoyed cars until she stopped driving and generously gave one away instead of trading it in. A loyal friend, and feminist before her time, she was instrumental in helping some of her female friends gain their independence.
She will be greatly missed by her family and her absence will be felt strongly at every Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter dinner, family birthday and special occasion.
A private family ceremony will be held in her honour. Her family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the nurses and doctors on 3 West, 5 West and Palliative Care at Dartmouth General Hospital. To leave an online message of condolence please visit www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
