Ramia, John - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Ramia, 75, Halifax, who passed away after a lengthy illness on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born on February 9, 1935 in Diman, Lebanon he immigrated to Canada in 1956. He worked as a baker at the French Pastry Shop and Dominion Stores before opening the IPC General Store, which he ran from 1972-2000. Known to those closest to him as the “Chief” he will be fondly remembered for the simple things he enjoyed in life, such as his weekly trips to the valley, his beautiful gardens, his passion for baking, and how he filled the room with his love of life and laughter. He loved both of his homes in Halifax and Diman and had the great fortune to visit his beloved homeland the past two summers
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Janet (Salah), his adoring sons Joseph (Geneviève), Charles (Renée), Anthony (Josephine) and John (Bridget) and his precious grandchildren, John, Jana, Johana, Natasha, Nicole, Charlie, Maria, Anthony, and Andrew. Brother Louis (Houda) and sister Margaret (Hanna Metlej). He is predeceased by his parents Youseff and Anjoul Ramia, his brother Anthony, and his sister Helena Saab. Visitation will be on Monday, December 20th at Cruickshank’s Funeral Home, Windsor Street from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral mass will be at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish on Tuesday December 21st at 10am, Father Mark Cherry and Father Pierre Azzi officiating. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
