It is with profound sadness that we announce John’s passing on March 23rd, 2022, in the palliative care unit of the VG hospital. John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer.
John was born in Halifax, son of the late Ralph and Noreen (Carnell) Nixon and spent his early years in Halifax and Hammonds Plains. After graduating from Sydney Stephen High School in Bedford, John attended Halifax Vocational School to study electrical construction. He spent many years working in the industry, where he was well-liked and respected by his co-workers for his work ethic, knowledge of his trade and good nature. John worked on and supervised many large projects in the HRM and throughout Canada. He was a proud member of I.B.E.W. Local 625 for more than 50 years, maintaining many close friendships with his colleagues. After leaving construction, he went on to work for the Halifax Regional School Board for a number of years, retiring in 2015.
John put others first at all times, helping family, friends, and neighbours without being asked and never expecting anything in return. He put people at ease with his unassuming and likable approach and formed close friendships easily. He loved the outdoors, working in his yard, taking time to chat with neighbours, offering to lend a hand wherever and whenever he could, and always showing up when he was needed.
In retirement, John and his wife Pat enjoyed trips to places including Ireland, Italy and throughout Canada. Above all, family was first for John. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy, he was always happy in their company and proud of all their accomplishments. He loved being part of their lives. John was a wonderful husband, father and Grampie, and his loving wife Pat, his children, grandchildren and family pets will greatly miss him.
John is survived by his wife Patricia (Crowley) of 44 years, his daughters Ami (Gabe Tanguay) and Erin (Matthew Rideout), his grandsons Charlie and Emmett Rideout, his sister Debbie Ross (Don) and an extended family including many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Frank Nixon and Fred Nixon.
Pat, Ami, and Erin would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of the palliative care unit of the VG hospital and the VON nurses for the kind and compassionate care they provided John throughout his illness. In keeping with John’s belief in helping others in need, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank, Chalice, or a charity of your choice.
Funeral service will be held at Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic Church, 18 Scholars Rd., Upper Tantallon, NS, on Friday April 1, 2022 at 11:00 AM.
