John was born on January 23, 1952, to Jack and Trudy Emmett in Windsor, Ontario. John graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Environmental Design from the Nova Scotia Technical College in 1976. John was a lifetime member of the Nova Scotia Association of Architects (President and Past President 1995-1996), a lifetime member of the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada (RAIC Fellowship 1999), and Atlantic Provinces Representative to the RAIC National Board (1992-2002).
John was a Senior Partner, Managing Director, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of WHW Architects (1982-2011), specializing in healthcare related projects. Notable projects include the QEII Hospital, East Hants Hospital Replacement Project, Atlantic Veterinary Hospital, and the Summerside Wellness Centre.
John is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Patricia (Sullivan), son Jonathan, daughters Kelly (Jonathan), Erin (Paul), Shannon (Andrew), and nine grandchildren (Oliver and Joshua Emmett; Madeline, Owen, and Gabriella DeCoste; Evangeline and Luke Evans; and Parker and Josie Evans). John is also survived by his mother Trudy, sister Ann Maria (Tom), brother Peter (Heather), and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Jack, mother and father-in-law Ruth and Cerry, brothers-in-law Danny and Stephen, niece Adrienne, and grand nephew Brennan.
John was happiest when he was surrounded by family, especially on their many extended family vacations. No project was ever too big or too small for John when it came to helping his children. If you couldn’t find John at one of his children’s houses, you could be sure to find him making good use of his Kubota. John enjoyed poker and golf, especially the annual Sandy Lake ice golf tournament and Sandy Lake Friday happy hour.
A celebration of life will be held at Glen Arbour Golf Course (Hammonds Plains) on Sunday, November 10th from 1-3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. In honour of John’s memory and the countless blood transfusions that gave him precious time with his loved ones, our family encourages everyone who can to consider donating blood.
Though you are gone, the love you gave us remains, a beautiful reminder of your presence in our lives.
