It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Gordon Arthur Conrad, age 99, of The Ivy Meadows, Beaver Bank, NS (formerly of Halifax). Born in Lunenburg on November 19, 1923, he was the son of the late Captain Akiah and Nellie (Arenburg) Conrad. He married Violet Marguerite (Margie) Smith on April 10, 1954, with whom he celebrated 64 happy years.
Gordon grew up in Lunenburg where he attended Lunenburg Academy. As a teenager, he delivered telegrams for CN Telegraph on his bicycle. He later relocated to Halifax as a Telegraph Operator with CN and was promoted to Senior Operator prior to retiring from CNCP Telecommunications after an extraordinary 40+ years.
Gordon was a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge and St. John’s United Church, where he participated in numerous committees. Other memberships included Pin-Hi Golf Club and various bowling clubs. He was the official planner and navigator of the Conrad family annual summer vacations to Northeastern USA. Many happy times were had on those trips over the years. Gordon was a huge hockey and baseball fan and enjoyed cheering on his favourite teams, the Leafs and Blue Jays.
Other favourite pastimes included daily neighbourhood walks, drives to Point Pleasant Park and walks along the Halifax waterfront. Gordon loved working on household projects and prided himself on keeping the family home in pristine condition and was also especially proud of his backyard garden.
Gordon was predeceased by his wife, Margie. He is survived by his son, Blair (Halifax) and daughter, Karen (Toronto). His care has been entrusted to J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax.
