FLEMMING, Geraldine Rita - of Halifax, passed away gracefully and peacefully surrounded by her loving family, at home, on August 19, 2010, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Born June 5, 1947 she was the daughter of the late Harry and Kathleen (Pettipas) Oakley. Geraldine is survived by her dearly loved brother Kevin and his wife Debbie, her niece Kayla, nephew Matthew and his wife Caitlin and their children Justin, Rowan, and Preston. Also left to cherish her memory are special cousin Jeannine Carmichael of Ont. and life long friend Shirley McManus, P. E. I. She will also be greatly missed by her aunts, Laura (Jim) Millington and Josephine King, her uncle John Pettipas, and several cousins. Geraldine, a woman of great integrity, was devoted and very loyal to her family and friends. Her unwavering faith, humble spirit, and generous nature sustained her in life and made her a source of inspiration to all who knew her. She was educated in the Halifax public school system before attending and graduating from Mount St. Vincent University with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Bachelor of Education Degree. She then dedicated her life to teaching Home Economics, at Cornwallis Jr. High School and Gorsebrook Jr. High School, until her retirement in 2002. Geraldine, gifted and extremely creative, had a true passion for teaching, always enjoyed and cherished her students, and was very highly respected by colleagues and the hundreds of families she worked with throughout her career. She was an avid gardener, seamstress, cook, and artisan who thrived on designing and creating her own crafts. Her impeccable attention to detail and perfection made her much sought after creations sparkle with style and beauty. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Geraldine’s very supportive and compassionate caregivers, the Q E 11 Palliative team, the V. O. N., Red Cross, and all the Nurses and Doctors who cared for her so lovingly during her year long journey with cancer. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, where visitation will be held from 2–4 and 7–9 on Sunday, August 22. A service in celebration of Geraldine’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 23 at St Michael Church, St. Michael’s Ave., Spryfield. Donations in Geraldine’s memory may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, where she was a volunteer for many years, or a charity of your choice.
