It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Fred Gallagher in his sleep on April 9th, 2022, at the age of 86. He was a life-long resident of Halifax, the eldest son of Wilfred Jerome (Romie) and Grace Gallagher. He was educated at St. Patrick’s High, Saint Mary's University, and TUNS and had a long career at NS Power as an electrical engineer, retiring in 1992. He contributed to his community in many ways through volunteering and support of sports activities. The Centennial Rink commission and St. Vincent de Paul were two organizations that were very near and dear to his heart. He was an athlete his entire life, excelling in both baseball and hockey. He retired from hockey at a young 84 as he could no longer hold his hockey stick in his arthritic hands, but continued to skate several times weekly until his passing.
He married the love of his life Elizabeth (Betty) MacDonald in May 1963. In addition to Betty, he is survived by his children Kathy (Doug Polak), Carolyn (Todd Barter) and David (Jody Rice). He was the most amazing dad to his children and he always supported them 100 percent. He was a loving "Papa" to his grandchildren, Laura and Sarah Polak, Jake, Luke and Allie Barter, and Bridgid and Rowan Gallagher. He is also survived by his only brother Terry (Peggy) Gallagher, the MacDonald Clan and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was extremely proud of all his grandchildren. They brought him great joy and he attended all their activities whether in a gym, field or rink. He was the ultimate “super fan." They all felt supported and loved by their Papa. He often reminded them “when the going gets tough, the tough get going." He would try to convince them that he was unbendable like a piece of steel, but they all knew he was like putty in their hands. There was never a doubt how much he adored them.
He was a brilliant man who always paid attention to detail. He was aware of local and worldwide news. He attempted to embrace technology by getting a smart phone but barely learned to text! He loved to share his wisdom with anyone that was blessed to interact with him. He enjoyed a glass of wine, a bag of chips, and was known to frequent the casino. While it is unclear how much he spent at Casino NS, he would always report "I think I am up a bit."
The last 2 years he spent lovingly caring for Betty. He became her full-time caregiver and took on the duties of housekeeper, nurse, pharmacist and chef, all new to him. He never complained and his devotion to her could only be described to that of a saint. He lived every day to the fullest and despite his challenges, he always saw the bright side of things.
Our father left an indelible impact on all of our lives. "A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way." We will miss him forever.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday April 12 from 2-4 and 6-8pm in J A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday April 13 at 12:15pm in Saint Benedict Church, 45 Radcliffe Drive, Halifax. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Vincent de Paul or Alzheimer’s Society.
