It is with great sadness, but also gratitude for a long life well lived, that we announce the passing of our family matriarch, our wonderful mother, Florinda (Fiorina) Nadalini. Fiorina passed away on May 27, 2022, at the VG Site, QEII in Halifax at 94 years of age.
Fiorina came to Canada from Italy in 1959 to marry her fiancee Giovanni. Fiorina was a devoted wife and mother who loved nothing more than spending time with her family. Every Friday night we would gather for dinner in mamma's kitchen. Fiorina cooked us meals every Friday until she was 91 years old. Nobody cooked like our mamma... everything was always so tender and flavourful. No matter how we try, the flavours that Fiorina created when she cooked can never be replicated. Family favourites were roast beef, pheasant and polenta, spaghetti, and cannelloni... her cannelloni was legendary. No one ever left mamma's kitchen hungry.
Fiorina's greatest prides and joys were her two granddaughters, Linda and Alessandra, who she loved fiercely. She was so proud of them both.
Prior to the Pandemic, Fiorina was an avid walker. She could be spotted almost daily pushing her shopping cart from her home to the Sobeys in Clayton Park, where she would pick up daily groceries and meet up with her friends for coffee and a chat. Up until she was almost 90, Fiorina walked 3+ kilometres daily, rain or shine.
Fiorina's favourite 'not so guilty' pleasure was watching the TV shows The Bachelor, in all its incarnations, and Dancing With The Stars. We never really got the appeal, but she would never miss an episode. We would often catch her gleefully discussing the episodes with her friends on the phone.
Fiorina was fiercely independent, mightily headstrong, and hated change with a passion. Woe be the person who messed with her routines. She proudly lived alone in her home after Giovanni passed in 2003, and was pretty well self sufficient until she went to hospital. Everything was neat and tidy, and everything had its place... and God help anyone who moved her stuff. Fiorina was almost totally deaf by the time she turned 85 and had limited hearing in one ear. With the help of an amplified phone, she was able to keep in touch and converse with all her friends and family without skipping a beat.
Most importantly to her children and grandchildren, Fiorina was our mamma and nonna. She was loved by us so very much and will be greatly missed. There is now a huge void in our hearts and family.
Fiorina was predeceased by her parents, Armida and Pierro Bortoli; her loving husband of 44 years, Giovanni; her sister, Florinda; and her brothers, Guiseppe (Beppe), Guido, and Rinaldo (Nandutti). Fiorina is survived by her daughter, Luisa (Peter Francis); her sons, Gino and Roberto (Suzanne); her beloved granddaughters, Linda and Alessandra; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express gratitude to the entire staff of 6.2 - VG Site, QEII, who took wonderful care of Fiorina her last few weeks in hospital.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday June 1, 2022 at 2pm immediately followed by a funeral service at 3pm in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., followed by reception. Interment to follow at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery for immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Fiorina can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or charity of your choice. To leave an online message of condolence please visit www.jasnwofuneralhome.com
