It is with great sadness we share that Betty died peacefully at home on May 21, 2024. Born in Antigonish on January 12, 1931 to David F. and Bernadette (MacDonald) Sears. Betty grew up in Antigonish and graduated from Mount St. Bernard College with a diploma in secretarial science. After graduation she went to work for CJFX Radio Station in Antigonish until she left to dedicate herself to raising her family. In her younger days Betty was an accomplished skater and enjoyed outdoor rinks in even the coldest of weather.
Betty met Peter in 1951 while he was attending St. F.X. They were married in August 1953, a marriage that was celebrated for almost 71 years. Betty spent her married life loving and supporting Pete and raising and nurturing their five children of whom she was immensely proud. Without her unqualified and tireless support, Peter said that he could never have made the career choices he did.
Betty is survived by her husband Peter and their children – Debbie (Clair Rankin), St. Peters; Ken, Dartmouth; Steve (Darlene), Dartmouth; Gary (Tammy), Mazatlan, Mexico; Mike, New York City. She is also survived by her doting grandchildren Aaron, Matt, Emily, Adrienne, Nick, Michelle, and Bryan as well as her great grandchildren Dominic, Zoey, Emma, Hawk and Baya. She was predeceased by her parents, Dave and Bernie, as well as her brothers Donald and Leo Sears, and sisters Kay Proper and Cynthia French.
We want to thank Dr. Sue Atkinson for her incredibly caring support during Betty’s final days as well as the outstanding care-givers with Home Instead. Betty’s remains have been cremated and at her request there will be no funeral or burial service. Visitation and floral tributes are gratefully declined. Instead, donations may be made to L’Arche Foundation or a charity of your choice.
