LOGAN, Elizabeth Joyce (Grosscup), 93, died peacefully at home on January 9th, 2023, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Ralph, her parents Lytton and Josephine Grosscup (nee Loop), and her brother, Jack Grosscup. Born October 15, 1929 in Berwick, Joyce grew up in nearby Kentville, developing a deep love for Nova Scotia. While attending Acadia University, she met the incomparable Ralph Logan, who was smitten by both her charm and her beauty. Due to the fact that she was also very smart and was in a position to be picky, she gave him a bit of a hard time before finally giving in. They married at the hospital bedside of her brother Jack, who had recently been in an accident but happily survived to see her thrive for many decades.
After graduation, the newlyweds lived in Montreal where Joyce worked for Household Finance and had two children, John and Jim. Having been a hockey player herself, Joyce taught them how to skate and play the game. In 1966, the family moved to Halifax, where Joyce devoted herself to her family and to working to strengthen her community. She was a proud member of the congregation at St. Augustine’s Church, a member of the Saraguay Club, and was often in the company of Ralph at the Armdale Yacht Club and the Ashburn Golf Club. Joyce was tireless in her volunteer work for the Children’s Hospital and was devoted in her support of several charities. In her spare time, Joyce enjoyed picking through antique stores and spending time entertaining neighbourhood friends. She was somehow a natural at bowling, and brought home the hardware to prove it. Joyce was always thrilled to spend time with the family at the treasured family cottage in Rayworth Beach, New Brunswick.
The home Joyce and Ralph eventually built themselves has a beautiful view of Williams Lake. In that home Joyce and Ralph enjoyed many years together, and Joyce took care of Ralph at home like a guardian angel in his final years. In her later years Joyce was a captivated biographer for countless squirrels, deer, loons and other birds frequenting her yard and shore. She had a sharp mind and a dry wit, and she always devoted her undivided attention to whoever was sharing a story with her, particularly if that person was one of her cherished grandchildren. “Grammy” will be dearly missed by her sons, John (Nora), Vancouver, and Jim (Nikki), Prince George, and her four grandchildren: Jack, Clare, Kate, and James.
The family would like to extend sincere and heartfelt thanks to Joyce’s dedicated, patient, and loving caregivers. You were her guardian angels, and you made it possible for her to live in her home until the end, her enduring wish. She is with Ralph now and she has your backs. Visitation will be from 4-7 on Thursday, January 19 at Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Interment will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Hospital or the Alzheimer’s Society.
