January 22, 1929 - May 6, 2019
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, sister, and friend, Joyce Dickey, on Monday May 6, 2019 at the age of 90.
Joyce was the daughter of the late Dr. Michael James Carney and Evelyn (Deanie) (Levis) Carney of Halifax
Joyce was a lifelong resident of Halifax and a faithful member of the Catholic Church, most notably at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. She Graduated from Dalhousie School of Law in 1954 as one of only three women in her class, and was called to the Bar shortly thereafter. Joyce delighted in spending time with her family, enjoying the outdoors, and working in her garden. She loved sports and was an avid skier and golfer. She enjoyed tennis and sailing and was a star player on the Dalhousie women’s Varsity hockey team in her University years. Joyce was a fixture at the Waegwoltic tennis courts and the Ashburn golf courses, and was easy to spot on the slopes of Ski Wentworth in her famous green ski suit.
A dedicated volunteer, Joyce devoted time to causes big and small, including the Canadian Cancer Society, Home of the Guardian Angel and more than a decade with Halifax Meals on Wheels, both tirelessly delivering meals and serving as President.
Joyce will be remembered not only for her sense of humour, quick wit, and independent, stubborn spirit, but for her famous Brown Bread (also known as Grandma Bread or Mrs. Dickey Bread), chocolate chip cookies, and blueberry pie.
Joyce is survived by her children: Arthur Dickey (Raymond St Aubin) Toronto ON, Michael Dickey (Paula MacDonald) Boston MA, John Dickey (Marie Klopf) Ann Arbor MI, Stephen Dickey (Catherine) Halifax, Greg DePaco (Kim) Burnaby BC, Mary-Kate Williamson (Rob) Ottawa ON; her Grandchildren Stephen, Ashley, Rebecca, Timothy, Matthew, Evelyn, Lysander, Patrick and Amy; her Great Grandchildren Charlotte and Liam; her sister Janet Carney (Halifax), honorary family members Agnes (Fougere) Landry (Halifax), Ursula Steiner (Montreal) and many, many friends.
Joyce was predeceased by the love of her life, husband John H. Dickey QC, her brother Michael Carney, her sister Anne (Nancy) Carney and her Granddaughter Jennifer Anne Dickey.
The family would like to thank Benita Clarke and Diane Mauger for their loving care in the early stages of Joyce’s illness; the staff of Evan Hall at Parkstone Enhanced Care for their love, dedication and gentle care over the last two years, and, more recently, the staff at Manor Lane for seeing us through this most difficult time with guidance and compassion.
There will be a funeral mass on Saturday May 11, 2019 at 10 am at St Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Oxford Street in Halifax, with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Halifax Meals on Wheels, The Alzheimer's Society of Canada, or a charity of your choice.
