The Ross family is saddened to announce the peaceful passing of their Mother, Edith Alice Ross (Robson) on April 1, 2021, under the tender care of the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on June 16th, 1926, mom always remained a Cape Bretoner. Her heart never left.
Mom graduated, with Honors, from City of Sydney Hospital Nursing program in 1947. It was while studying that Edith met her future husband, Gordon William Ross. Together, Gordon and Edie raised four children, Gregory, Kirk, Mary Elaine and Nancy. Mom and Dad had a busy and active life in Sydney with four young children and were involved with the Rotary Club musicals, Nova Scotia Mining Society, and the Association of Professional Engineers.
Dad was transferred to Halifax in 1964 and so began a new life of adventures. Edie was very active in the Engineer’s Wives Association, Women of Rotary, The Mining Society of Nova Scotia, St. Andrew’s United Church and the St. Cecilia Concert Series. She was recognized with the Paul Harris Fellow, by the Halifax Rotary Club and by the Nova Scotia Mining Society, for her significant contributions to their organization.
Mom and Dad were very social and our home was often filled with friends, neighbours and business associates. Mom was an amazing hostess and always made sure everything was “just right” to ensure a spectacular evening was had by all. Be it at home or a convention.
Mom was an avid reader and continued that habit well into her golden years and was grateful for the large-print book deliveries provided by the Halifax Library. An accomplished seamstress and knitter, Mom turned out beautiful articles of clothing for each and every one of us, which were always worn with pride. Mom also prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner every day and an endless supply of baked goods.
Beside her parents, Mom was predeceased by husband, Gordon, son, Greg, and her brothers Jack and Karl. A mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister and friend she will be sadly missed by her children, Kirk Ross (Nenie Gillis), Mary Elaine Bell (Ron) Nancy Ross (Andre Savoie); Grandchildren, Nick Smith, Sarah Smith (Bridget O’Donnell) Lisa (Ches) Pederson, Julie Bell, Emilie Savoie . Great Grandchildren, Alex, Jordan and Taylor Connick, Owen Pederson and Sophie Mecking. She will be missed by her sisters, Barbara Fitsell, Kingston ON , Shirley MacPherson London ON, sister-in law, Christine Robson,Cranebrook, Australia and her friends everywhere.
We would like to thank the capable staff of Parkland Clayton Park for the compassionate and loving care for Mom, while she resided there as well as the amazing team in 7.4, Halifax Infirmary.
If you would like to honor our mother, a donation to the Halifax Rotary Club, St. Andrews United Church or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Cremation has taken place. Service will be held Saturday April 10, 2021@ 2p.m. St. Andrew’s United Church, 6036 Coburg Road, Halifax. 902-422-3157
“Pippa’s Song”
The year’s at the spring,
And day’s at the morn;
Morning’s at seven;
The hill-side’s dew-pearl’d;
The lark’s on the wing;
The snail’s on the thorn;
God’s in His heaven-
All’s right with the world!
Robert Browning (1812-1889)
