Age 94 of Sambro, NS passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Halifax Infirmary on January 8, 2019.
Born July 30, 1924 in Halifax, N.S, he was the son of the late Stanley & Isabella McGrath. Don worked in the steamship industry starting with Furness Withy and Company in 1940 and later as General Manager of Furncan Marine and F.K. Warren Ltd retiring in 1989. Don was responsible for organizing convoys supplying Britain during WW2 and organized container and cargo shipping in Halifax throughout his career. Don was a member of the Army Reserves, RCAMC. and was a life member of the Musicians Union. He was a well-known fiddler. Don’s various hobbies included photography, carpentry, boating, boat building, hunting and fishing. Don was a graduate of DeVry Institute of Technology.
Survived by his loving wife, Margaret, of 58 years, his sons Gregory (Pamela), Bruce, Alan, Daniel (Colleen) & Stephen (Shannon), grandchildren Michael, Tyler, Brendan, Bradley, Amy, Alyson, Zoe, Morgan, Calum, and many nieces and nephews.
Don was predeceased by his parents and sister Frances Short.
The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses at the Halifax Infirmary, 7th Floor Neurology Unit. We would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Robert Scoville, Don’s family physician.
A funeral service will be held at the Cruikshank’s Funeral Home on 2666 Windsor Street at 2:00 PM on January 12, 2019, with a reception to follow. Rev. Helene Burns will be officiating with an internment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James United Church, 3811 Old Sambro Road, Sambro, NS B3V 1G2, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
