It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David James Campbell on February 15, 2018. Born on May 1, 1943, David was the only son of the late James and Pearl (Richardson) Campbell. He had a long career with the provincial government, and served for a while in the government employees union, but he was known to many people throughout the province for his long-time involvement in and passion for hockey. David not only played and coached, he served as president of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League since 1990 and could often be seen at games and tournaments talking at great length about the sport he loved. He also found great joy in golfing, fishing, an evening of card games, computers, barbecuing, and so many more pursuits.
But what David was really known for was his devotion to his family—his wife, Frances (Elsworth); his sons, Tim and Mark (Lyz Sutcliffe); his daughter, Heather; and perhaps the pride of his life, his two grandchildren, Timmy and Maria. And his sense of community and family was such that he also considered his grandkids' friend Dion Brown his own grandson. Whether you knew him as Dave, Harv, or Bumpy--as we called him--you knew there was no one quite like him. He was funny, he was larger than life, and he had a heart so big, all who came into his circle found a place like home there.
We ask in lieu of flowers that you make a donation to a charity of your choice in his name and reflect, as we do, on all the ways he was a great son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will truly be missed. A visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Tuesday, Feb 20 from 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Feb 21 at 2 pm at St. Andrews Anglican Church, 2553 St Margarets Bay Rd, Timberlea, NS.
