With broken hearts we announce the unexpected passing of Darlene Carolyn Hickey on February 21, 2023 at the QE11 Halifax Infirmary. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Joyce (Raftus) Mills and Patrick Hickey. Predeceased by her parents, stepmother Dorothy (Dot) Hartling; life partner Gifford Tynes; sister Cindy and step-grandson Ryan White. Loving, supportive and devoted mother of Chantel (Stephen), stepmother of James West (Ashley) and Tianna Tynes. Loving step-grandmother to the late Ryan White, with whom she raised Tyree, Tyrome, Breayla and Ceanna. Loving brother Jack (Sandra) and many aunts, uncles and cousins will remember her as well as her large network of friends.
She had a genuine presence of thoughtfulness, never missing sending lovely cards in the mail, always thinking of the needs of others before her own. She was Executive Director at Catholic Cemetery Commission for more than 20 years assisting the bereaved with the utmost compassion, until the Commission’s restructuring. At the time of her passing Darlene was with our Neighbourhood Living society as Financial Coordinator, where her perfectionist skills were valued. She volunteered with many organizations living out her Catholic faith, quietly helping those in need who were homeless, hungry or abused. She was here to help others. She was a member of Sackville Calais 162 legion along with Ladies Auxiliary.
Travel was a passion with her daughter Chantel, mother Joyce and special cousin Little Dar, seeing Disney several times, Las Vegas, California, New Orleans, Bahamas, Texas and more.
Visitation will be held Tuesday February 28 from 6-8pm at JA Snow Funeral Home Halifax. Memorial service March 2, 2023 at 9am at St Thomas Aquinas Church, Fr Own Connolly presiding. Burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, with reception at Sackville Calais 162 Legion, 45 Sackville Cross Rd.
