It is with profound sadness that the family of Charles A.E. Fowler announce his peaceful passing on 23 August 2021 surrounded by family. Born in 1921, Dad was raised and educated in central Halifax. He was a graduate of Dalhousie University (BSc.), McGill University (BEng), and University of Manitoba (BArch). He deployed overseas to the European theatre as part of the post WWII reparations effort. After returning to Halifax he married his Dalhousie sweetheart, Dorothy Christine Graham. Charles joined his father at C.A Fowler & Co.which later evolved into Fowler, Bauld and Mitchell. He worked on numerous projects including the Angus L. MacDonald bridge. One of his well-known projects was the Dalhousie Arts Centre - Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. He also served as an advisor on the National Research Council for many years.
Dad and Mom provided a wonderful upbringing for son Graham and daughter Beverly. Many cherished memories are held of life in Boulderwood and summers in St. Margaret's Bay. Charles and Dorothy loved to travel and travel they did: Mexico, Japan, Europe, the Middle East, Italy, the USA and South America.
In retirement, Charles was a consultant on a number of projects and was lead architect for Centre 200 in Sydney, NS. He was honoured in 2010 by being selected by the Nova Scotia Association of Architects and Dalhousie University as part of the inaugural group of five "Keystones of Our Community" architects who made a remarkable contribution and legacy to their profession throughout their careers.
Charles was a Founding (and Life) member of the Saraguay Club, a Life Member (and longest serving member) of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, a Fellow and past President of the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada, an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture, past President of the Nova Scotia Association of Architects, Life Governor - Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, a former Director Nova Scotia Tidal Corporation, and a Life Member of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust - HMCS SACKVILLE.
Dad was a loving and generous father and husband, a man with great spirit and enthusiasm for life. In fact, his long life can be attributed to pursuing the mantra: keep active in mind and body. Dad had a quick wit and a dry sense of humour. He will be forever missed by his family and many friends. Dad was predeceased by his parents: Charles Allison and Mildred Fowler, his beloved wife of 53 years Dorothy who passed away in 1998, his sister Jacquline, and second wife Ruby Crooks. He is survived by son Graham (Catherine Perehudoff), Saskatoon, his daughter Beverly (Patrick) Charlton, Tantallon: grandchildren Charles (Zoe Thiery) and Stephanie Fowler, Saskatoon, Rachel Fowler, Pennsylvania, USA, nephew Michael Atkins (Kashka Kril and their daughter Jacqueline), Toronto & Nova Scotia.
