Caroline Phelps Scott (nee Coghill) passed away peacefully on September 21, 2020 in Victoria General Hospital, Halifax in her 94th year. Born in Ottawa, she was the daughter of Eva May (Phelps) Coghill and Harry Judson Coghill. She attended Queen's and Dalhousie Universities and graduated in medicine.
Caroline was a pioneer as she was one of only two women in her medical class at Dalhousie. In a sense she was following in the footsteps of her mother who was a nurse on the Western Front in WW1. She worked in public health in Victoria BC and was involved in the then new vaccination program for polio. She also worked closely with the BC Haida community. In the 1960s and 1970s Caroline worked for the precursor to Health Canada on the regulation of prescription drugs and for a time she was head of the Bureau of Pharmaceutical Advisory Services.
Caroline married John (Jack) Scott who was a WW2 veteran and survivor of the sinking of HMCS Athabaskan. Jack was a lucky survivor in WW2 but sadly succumbed to cancer in 1989. Caroline maintained naval connections after Jack died and became a dedicated Trustee of HMCS Sackville.
As a naval wife, Caroline moved often with husband Jack and two children Heather and Bill.
Caroline was the youngest of three siblings. She was very close to her brother Donald and sister Betty. She maintained strong links with Betty's sons Rob and Pete, Donald's daughter Marsha, and Donald's grandson Chris.
As well as her children Heather and Bill, Caroline is survived by four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She travelled often to visit her son Bill, daughter in law Linda and grandchildren Laura and Isabelle in Canberra Australia, and her daughter Heather and son in law Tim and grandchildren Ailsa and Will in Ontario. The family grew with Ailsa and husband Adrian's children Ailish, Marion, Everton, and Bayard. More recently Will and wife Dani's daughter Fia was born. She cared about all the family and never forgot a birthday.
Special thanks to Kathy Smith, Ashley Myers, Catherine-Anne Murray and her Geriatric Team for all their care and support.
Following cremation there will be a burial at sea so Caroline can join her beloved husband Jack.
