She was born to Evelyn and Melbourne Doucette on June 24, 1944. After graduating from Halifax West High School, she embarked on a challenging career as a Registered Nurse. Her Halifax Infirmary Nursing school buddies, her “Golden Girls”, when over for a visit or going out to enjoy a meal, would share stories of her gentle, kind and calm demeanor around patients and doctors. Not one to miss a joke, her dry sense of humour was loved by all, and absorbed by each of her children. A prime example: after marrying her high school sweetheart, Douglas Smith, she surprised everyone by announcing she was pregnant with twins on April Fools Day.
The things she held dearest to her heart were her husband, children, nursing career and a beautiful, welcoming home for all. She also found the time to contribute to her community by starting a Brownie pack, helping with playgroups, and volunteering for activities at the local school. As her children started their own families, she relished being the Taxi Nanny, especially to her beloved grandsons, Liam and Douglas, whisking them away to all of their practices and lessons with a rewarding supper afterwards.
Predeceased by her husband, Douglas and beloved sister and best friend, Flora (MacDonald), she is survived by her children Sean (Anita), Leigh and Robert as well as grandchildren Liam, Douglas, Zoey, Jaime and Ryder and sister Maude (Ryder). Funeral plans have not been finalized. We cannot thank the selfless health staff of 3 East, Veterans Memorial Building and PATH (https://pathclinic.ca/) enough for their care and support during this trying time. Please love and cherish your own families as much as mum cherished hers.
