Bruce lived his adult life in Halifax and the main focus of his life has always been his three children. He was an incredible father who lived and existed for his children. His main purpose was to provide a loving home, cherished memories, and a solid sense of family.
Bruce completed 35 years of military service. He enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces (CF) at the age of 17 as a Med A. While serving as a Medic his highlight was looking after the Vietnamese refugees arriving in Edmonton. In September 1989 Bruce was commissioned into the CF as a Nursing Officer.
While serving as a Nurse his tours of duty sent him to Gracac, Bosnia; Camp Mirage, Dubai, UAE.; and later to Afghanistan (X3). He served as a Charge Nurse at the Role3 MMU, KAF Afghanistan - Trauma Centre. He was very proud of his service to his country.
Bruce was very honoured when artist Karen Bailey recognized him for his dedication to his patients in Afghanistan and therefore added his likeness within the Official Portrait of the Governor-General Michael Jean where it is housed in the Governor General’s mansion in Ottawa. Bruce commenced his bucket list of items with a 'road' trip to Ottawa to be photographed with this painting. He was so very proud of this moment.
Bruce loved history, playing Sudoku, movie night and pho, sushi, swimming, camping, dancing, a good party with family and friends....and, oh yes, shopping and getting a deal. No matter where he travelled he would make a purchase to add to his home and for each of his children. He celebrated life by fulfilling his bucket list as he could not change the outcome. He maximized his time with his children and travelled to all corners of the world. His most memorable trips included a trip to Disney World with his children and going to New Zealand to visit the various locations The Lord of the Rings was filmed.
Bruce was highly regarded by his family but also by many of his patients. He was nurturing, caring and compassionate. He had an incredible bedside manner that will be missed by all. Bruce thanks his family and colleagues for the outpouring of love, and exemplary support that he received throughout the entirety of this difficult time.
Visitation will be at J.A. Snow Funeral Home 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax on Monday, March 26 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM followed immediately by the funeral service from 3-4 PM. Bruce will be laid to rest in Beechwood National Military Cemetery in Ottawa.
Bruce wanted his children to know when they looked up at the moon to remember that he loves them forever and always to the moon and back.
Donations may be made in honour of his children to the IWK Health Centre Foundation
