Age 91 of Halifax, passed away November 27, 2019 at the QEII. Born in Umbulwana, South Africa, he made his journey to Canada in 1975 as Senior Killam Fellow. In addition to his extensive work in Africa, he worked at Dalhousie University, St Mary’s University, Mt St Vincent University, the Black Cultural Centre and served as Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission. He was a humble man, served his community as a Rotarian and shared his wisdom through the more than 20 books he wrote and edited. He was recipient of the Gandhi, King, Ikeda award, the Order of Nova Scotia and the Order of Canada.
Survived by his wife of 67 years, Leela; daughters Indira and Ansuya; sons Jairaj, Santosh and Pradeep; sister Baby; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place under the direction of JA Snow Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Gathering will take place Sunday December 1, from 2 -4, with remarks at 2:30, at Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the QEII Hospital Foundation. The family would like to send special thanks to the paramedics and the QEII health team for their extraordinary care.
