Born to Margaret (MacIver) and Frank Allan into the large and gregarious family, on a farm in the lovely village of Pugwash, Beryl was the second youngest of many brothers and sisters - Max (Jessie Canfield), Bruce (Margaret Wood), Mildred (Millard Trenholm), Doreen (Doug Mackenzie), Silver (Edith Ives), Mary (Vincent Lacelle), Jack, Hester, and Ann (Maurice Doucet).
While living in the big city of Halifax with her dear friends Dorothy and Marg, and always taken care of by sister Hester, Beryl met and married Thomas (Tom) Arab. Eventually settling in Kingston, Nova Scotia, over their 51 years of marriage and with a shared love of travel, learning and faith, Beryl and Tom raised their four children Margaret (Peter Alexander), Leigh Ann, Andrew, and Christine (Frank Nan). Beryl’s greatest loves were her Allan family, her children and her grandchildren – Ashleigh (Phill Gauthier), Thomas (Kealin Lamb), Drew, Stuart (Taylor Sutherland), Aaron (Olivia Fitzpatrick), Courtney (Connor Zinck), Elle (Jason McNamara) and Thijs. Beryl was blessed with two great grandchildren before she passed away, Aurora and Julien.
To know Beryl was to enjoy her kindness, humour and her interest in and empathy for others. Beryl’s favourite place was Pugwash with her life-long friends, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren. Her quiet joys were the rolling fields edging the Northumberland Strait, walks on “our” beach, lobster, and on the less quiet side, a box of wine with her sisters on sunny summer afternoons.
Beryl moved to Halifax after Tom’s passing and loved her time with her sisters, exploring the city and spending every day in the Public Gardens. Beryl was a proudly imperfect, sweet, patient (except when it was hot outside), generous, pragmatic, smart, strong and honest woman, adored by her husband, children and family.
In her final years, Beryl lived with wretched Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, including within various COVID-19 lockdowns which she did not understand. Even in the advanced stages of the disease, Beryl faced it all with great courage and strength, and always keeping her sweet soul.
The Arab Family would like to thank the Northwood Halifax campus for the wonderful care, support, friendship and constant respect they gave Beryl over the last three years. Special thank you to music therapist, Rhonda Hanson.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held for Beryl Arab at J.A. Snow Funeral Home (Lacewood drive) on Monday, 19th December at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Beryl’s name to the Alzheimer Society of Canada https://alzheimer.ca/en
