Born in Sydney Mines, Bernadette was the daughter of the late Olive Ross and Russell Ross. A long time employee of the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board, she was a devoted member of CUPE 5050. Together with her partners in crime, Edna and Florine, she worked tirelessly on behalf of her union.
Bernadette had a passion for learning which culminated in her fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a university graduate. This came to fruition when she graduated from Mount Saint Vincent University at the age of 62. Bernadette’s tenacity led to her next life goal, after one year of training she successfully completed a marathon at Disney World. However, Bernadette would tell you her greatest achievement was her role as a mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her loving companion, Richard Carrier; daughter, Wendy (Archie) McDonald; son, Dale (Sherri); grandchildren, Brennan and Kaleigh McDonald and Nicole Kearney; sisters, Olivia (Walt) Guitard, Burlington, ON and Gina Ross, Ottawa, ON.
She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel (Dale) Kearney; brother, Joe Ross; and brothers-in-law, Bobby Mullins and Sandy Campbell.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A private family service will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Halifax.
The family would like to thank the staff at Arborstone Enhanced Care for their loving care over the last three years. We are especially grateful to the staff who were with us in her final days.
