In whispered winds, her love will stay,
A gentle touch, as night meets day.
Though now she walks beyond our sight,
Her spirit lingers, pure and bright.
A mother’s love, our guiding light.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara Marie Pottle, a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and sister passed away on November 12, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Barbara was born in Stephenville on Dec 24, 1951, Newfoundland, to the late Winnifred and Charles White.
Barbara’s greatest pride and joy were her family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Frederick Pottle; their three children, Chandra Pottle (Peter Dyke), Danette Pottle (Christopher Cruikshank), and Brent Pottle (Rhonda Pottle); and her cherished granddaughters, Larkin Pottle and Charlie Cruikshank. She was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her grandson, Walker Pottle, who will grow up with her memory in his heart.
A woman of boundless love and energy, Barbara dedicated her life to her family and community. She raised her children with unwavering devotion in Stephenville, NL, alongside Fred, and together they created a home full of warmth and laughter. Barbara’s adventurous spirit and zest for life took her on many travels, where she explored new places and immersed herself in different cultures. Whether it was sewing, knitting, painting, or crafting, she expressed her creativity in beautiful ways—often making tiny doll clothes for her daughters or special gifts for loved ones.
In her later years, Barbara found joy on the golf course, where she spent many happy hours with her close-knit group of friends both in Newfoundland and her winter home in Grand Haven, Florida. She also loved bike-riding and socializing with the friends she held dear in both places. Her friendships were a cornerstone of her life, and she treasured the time spent with those who meant the most to her.
Barbara was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a formidable businesswoman. For 40 years, she worked side by side with Fred in their many business ventures, providing the steady leadership that held both their family and their enterprises together. She was the heart and soul of their businesses—a true matriarch who balanced the demands of work and home with grace and strength.
Barbara also devoted much of her time to giving back to the community. She was an active volunteer and advocate for several organizations, including the CNIB, Institute for the Blind, SPCA, and the Stephenville Theatre Festival. Her compassion and generosity left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Barbara is also survived by her twelve siblings: Gary White, Brian White, Brad White, Rod White, Vince White, Marina Hillier, Kevin White, Desmond LeBlanc, Dorsey White, Annette White, Arlene White, and Collette DuBordieu. Her brother and sister in laws; Sandy Pottle, Carol Terleckyi, Keith Pottle, Karen Pottle, Todd Pottle and Tony Pottle, their significant others, and many nieces and nephews. She is now reunited with her parents, Winnifred and Charles White, her mother-in-law Elsie Pottle, her father- in- law, Eugene Pottle, her sister-in-law Paula Pitcher and brother-in-law Greg Pottle in heaven.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate and caring staff at Dartmouth General Hospital and Hospice Halifax for their exceptional support and kindness during this difficult time.
Barbara will be remembered for her boundless love, her spirit of adventure, and her unwavering dedication to family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and joy, and she will forever be missed by all who knew her.
“We know that we can’t have you, but we’re happy knowing the angels have finally got you back. Goodbye to a wonderful woman and a beautiful mother.”
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Southcoast SPCA and the Sir Thomas Roderick Children’s Foundation.
At Barbara’s request a celebration of her life will be held in Stephenville, NL in July or August of 2025. Date and details will follow.
