Marie Annette "Anne" Ryan (nee Gushue) was born December 5, 1943 in Port au Port West, NL, and died peacefully surrounded by her family on March 18, 2023 in Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia due to complications after surgery.
After graduating high school, Anne studied at Littledale College in St. John’s, NL, and joined the Sisters of Mercy. After a year teaching at Littledale Girl’s School, Anne left the Order, and returned to Port au Port West to teach. She met Jerry Ryan on St. Patrick’s Day in 1966; they married and had 4 children.
Anne was involved in early childhood development for 37 years. She taught kindergarten and elementary school; She managed daycares, as well as a program for students with special needs at Our Lady Queen of Peace School in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador from 1977–1980.
Anne was very involved in her community. On her return to Port au Port West, she cared for children and foster children in her home, was librarian at Bishop O’Reilly High School, Town manager, and was lay minister for Our Lady of Mercy Church.
In 1998, she and Jerry moved to Halifax, NS; she attended Mount Saint Vincent University, and graduated with a degree in gerontology. She remained in Halifax, managing a counsellor training institute until her retirement.
Anne was a social butterfly and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She made friends easily and was always very young at heart.
A loyal fan of Elvis, Anne loved music and dancing so much — especially the jive. When she was young, she would dance with her siblings, and in later years, her children, often spontaneously, in the kitchen or living room. She would dance all day every day, if given the chance.
Anne was always very aware of the feelings of others. Many remember her as a kind, caring lady who was revered for her never-ending guidance—she was always there to listen, and to lend a helping hand.
When it came to books, school supplies, educational materials, craft supplies, music, her children, foster children, and those in her day care were never without. Anne loved to cook and bake, and had quite a collection of recipes. She was known near and far for her amazing carrot cake.
Anne is survived by her husband of 56 years Gerard Ryan, sons Robert and Steven (Katie) and daughters Deanna (Neil) and Patti (Michael); grandchildren, Chantel, Cory, Ally, Melanie, Christopher, and many nieces and nephews. Brothers William (Sheila), George (Mary), James (Judy), Lawrence, Michael (Micheline), Kirian (Doris) and Kevin (Kelle).
