Herbert W. Laden, age 94, of Teaneck, NJ, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2024. Beloved husband for 65 years of Gladys Laden. Devoted father of Dr. Sandra Laden (Steve Rappaport) of North Bethesda, MD; Carol Marcus of Fair Lawn, NJ; and Andrew Laden (Alison) of Pleasantville, NY. Dear brother of Carl Laden of Haifa, Israel. Cherished grandfather of Joshua and Livia Rappaport, Hannah, Wendee, and Jonathan Marcus, and Kaia and Marin Laden. Predeceased by brother Leonard Laden and son-in-law Evan Marcus.
Herbert was born on October 10, 1930 to Anna and Judah Laden in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn College and earned a master’s degree from Columbia University Teacher’s College. Herbert served in the US Army during the Korean War, and was on the front lines when the ceasefire was declared. After returning home, Herbert began a long and illustrious education career in New York City. He started out as a teacher at Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn, where he also served as the track coach. He worked for many years as Assistant Principal of P.S. 132 in Washington Heights, and as Science Supervisor at the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics in East Harlem. He was also an adjunct math instructor at Bronx Community College.
Herbert was a long-time member of Congregation Beth Sholom in Teaneck, where he served as president. He was very involved in local PTAs and often served as a mentor to young teachers.
Herbert loved to travel and had been to all seven continents. He was a Jets and Yankees fan, and an avid supporter of Rutgers football and basketball. In retirement, he spent many hours volunteering at the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative.
Services will be on Wednesday, November 13 at 12:30PM at Gutterman and Musicant Funeral Directors, 420 Park St., Hackensack, NJ, with burial at Beth El Cemetery Washington Township, New Jersey.
