Charles E. Smith Jr.

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Charles Elmore Smith, Jr., 63. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 11, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Charles was a beloved husband, father, papa, brother, son, uncle, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was known for his extreme generosity, kindness, patience, perseverance, and passion for helping others.

Charles was born on February 11, 1961, in Jacksonville, IL, where he spent his formative years and met the love of his life, Leonora Gorospe Smith. On July 19, 1980, they were married and began building a beautiful life for their family.

Charles was passionate about visiting his condo in Las Vegas, watching NASCAR races, traveling the world with family, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Charles is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Leonora; his children, Michelle Meyer and Michael (April) Smith; and his grandchildren, Dana, Gavin, Addison, Ashland, Alexander, and Brady. His mother, Norma Fortado, siblings, Geri (Mike) Howard, Tammy Howard, Cinda Fryman, Kristine (James) Piiparinen, Sam Fortado, and Brett Smith, along with many nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Smith, Sr.

Visitation will be at Marsh Funeral Home in Gurnee, IL, on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, from 4-8 pm. A Catholic funeral will be at St Paul the Apostle Church in Gurnee, IL, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 9:30 am, with burial to follow at Ascension Catholic Cemetery, 1920 Buckley Rd, Libertyville, IL 60048.
