Norman John Smith

With tremendous sadness, the family of Norman John Smith announce his passing at home, with Joan by his side, on February 27, 2022.

Born July 10, 1927, Norman is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years Joan Eileen Smith, his children Randy (Marta), Mary Jo (Paul), Brian (MeiLani), his daughter-in-law Pam, his dear sister Mary Cove, grandchildren Cathy, Todd, Trevor, Stefan, Madison, Zachary, Connor, Caitlin, and his great-grandchildren Lucas, Zoe, Ava, Chloe, Ruby, and Everly. He was predeceased by parents Janet and John Smith, sister Dorothy, by his daughter Julie-Anne, and by his sons Barry and David. Dozens of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and close friends also mourn his passing. He will be fondly remembered as Dada to Hanishka and Ariya.

The Basilica of Our Lady featured prominently in Norm's life, from his baptism in 1927, his early years as an altar boy and chorister, his devoted attendance at Mass, his charity work for St. Vincent de Paul, and his life-membership in the Knights of Columbus.

Norman was a dedicated Bell Canada employee for 44 years, and retained the many friends he made there via membership in The Pioneers. An avid angler, Norm taught the kids to fish, and together with Joan, took the family on numerous trips. They also modelled volunteerism, whether it be for SSVP or cancer support groups, and were renowned for their generous hospitality.

Less well known was Norm's expertise in Judo, and his one-and-only brush with the law, when he accidentally assisted some robbers at Quebec Street Mall! Norm and Joan were united by their legendary sense of humour, and - most of all - by enduring love for their family.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Shannon Hutton, the professionals at Bayshore Nursing, the LIHN palliative care unit, nurse Shannon Woods, and the Personal Support Workers who provided significant help and genuine caring for Norm. During their 67 years on Echo Drive, Norm and Joan appreciated the support of many loyal friends and neighbours: too many to be listed, but too kind to ever be forgotten.

Resting at the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin Street, North, Guelph where visitation will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022 from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at the Basilica of Our Lady Church, 28 Norfolk Street, Guelph on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. No registration is required, but continue to social distance and wear a mask. The funeral will be livestreamed and the link is available under Norm's obituary. Cremation to follow.
