Margaret was born and raised in Grimsby, England. In her childhood she was fond of cycling, field hockey, trips to the beach, and dancing. She grew up with her beloved sister Kathleen, and later when Margaret moved to Canada, in 1967, they continued traveling to be with each other frequently. She received her Masters degree from Cambridge University in England, which sparked a lifelong love of learning, literature and languages. Margaret was a respected school teacher while living in Hong Kong at Diocesan Preparatory School, and then at John F Ross CVI in Guelph where she taught for over 20 years. Margaret loved to travel which she did extensively, often combining her love of hiking with friends on these trips. She enjoyed spectating and participating in the dramatic arts, playing cards and games with family and friends, reading and a good cup of tea. Her retirement years at the Village by the Arboretum and the feeling of community she experienced there brought her great joy. Margaret also took pleasure in entertaining and hosting her many friends and family over the years.
Margaret will be forever missed by her loving sister, Kathleen Hobbs (Grimsby, England), her children Rachel Kery (Gyuszi), John Settle (Mel Mah), Hilary Combe (John), her cherished grandchildren Sarah, AJ, Isti, Stephanie, and Jeremy and four (soon to be five) great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Harcourt Memorial United Church in Guelph on Monday August 5th at 1:00PM.
Memorial donations to Margaret’s favourite charities would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy: Harcourt United Church, Chalmers Food Bank of Guelph ON, The Canadian Cancer Society, and Diabetes Canada.
