Ernie is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Mary McMartin. Ernie was predeceased by his first wife, Rosemary (1993). He was a devoted father to Grant McFarland (Amy Lychwa), Steve McFarland, and stepfather to Dan Ragula (Lauren McKay) and Lianna Ragula (Daniel Cho). He was a proud and cherished grandfather to Lotte and Margo Ragula. He will be dearly missed by his sister Debbie Crowe (Tony) and brother Paul McFarland (Karen). Uncle Ernie will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
A Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Guelph, Ernie’s contributions to both his field and his students were numerous and impactful. He received several prestigious awards throughout his career, including the John Bell Award (2009), the CAP Medal for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (1997), and the OCUFA Teaching Award (1989).
Ernie was passionate about physics and dedicated much of his life to inspiring others, instilling the same love of science in countless students, often beginning at a young age. His enthusiasm for science was evident through his work on the "Fantastic Physics Fun Show," a program performed at elementary schools and libraries that intrigued young students with hands-on experiments and engaging demonstrations. Additionally, Ernie served as an educational consultant on the "Eureka" TV show, where his expertise helped bring scientific concepts to life in a fun and accessible way for a wide audience. His commitment to making physics both exciting and understandable left a lasting impact on all who encountered his work.
Ernie had a profound love for the great outdoors. Hiking was more than just a pastime for him; it was a passion that allowed him to connect with nature and share memorable moments with those he loved. Whether it was a leisurely stroll along the Burlington waterfront trail or a challenging hike in Japan, his enthusiasm was infectious, inspiring friends and family to join him on these adventures.
A passionate musician, music played an integral role throughout Ernie’s life. From his University days, where he was part of the band "Random Sample" to his daily guitar playing and backyard jams with friends, music was a source of joy and connection for him. His mellifluous voice and skillful guitar playing were a testament to the countless hours he spent creating music. The calluses on his fingers were a mark of his dedication to his craft. His music reflected his spirit—lively, heartfelt, and always resonant.
Ernie was also a gifted listener. He had a remarkable ability to make anyone feel heard and valued. Friends and colleagues alike knew they could count on him for support and understanding. His empathy and wisdom provided comfort during difficult times, and his genuine interest in others made every conversation meaningful.
Ernie had a sweet tooth that was legendary. He never met a dessert he didn’t love, especially crème brûlée. Ernie approached dessert with the same enthusiasm he brought to life. Sharing meals with him was always a delightful experience, filled with laughter and stories.
As we remember Ernie today, let us celebrate the joy he brought into our lives. His spirit will live on in the memories we created together, in the laughter we shared, and in the love he so generously gave. Though he may no longer walk among us, he remains in our hearts—a reminder to cherish our relationships, embrace our passions, and savor every moment.
Thank you, Ernie, for being a wonderful friend, husband, father, and mentor. You will be dearly missed.
“If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
And to be once again with you” (Gordon Lightfoot)

A celebration of life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ontario Association of Physics Teachers or the Royal City Science Foundation would be appreciated, reflecting Ernie’s lifelong passion for science and education.
