At his home in Guelph and surrounded by his family, Corradino Mercante in his 88th year, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. Loving husband of Jean McEwan (2012) of 27 years, and Judy Gambacourt (2020) of 27 years. An incredible father to Rosanne (Stewart 1991), Marilu (1982), Danny (Patty), his three grandchildren, John (Jo), David (Laura), Christina (Josh), and six great-grandchildren; Owen, Lucas, Sophia, Lila, Marco and Mia. Dear brother of Andrea (2008), Olive, Antonio (Antoinette 2000), Norina Longo (Vince 2006), and Alfredo (Mary). Predecased by his sister Maria (1996) and brother in law Paolo (2015).
Born to Tomasso and Concetta in Castelli, Abruzzo, Italy. At the age of 17, he immigrated to Canada and in Brantford he married his first love, Judy, where they raised their family. He worked many jobs but only had one career at Guelph Twines from 1972-2011, when he retired at age 75, culminating 50 years in the rope/twine industry that began at the Brantford Cordage Company.
Happiest at family gatherings while enjoying great food and ice cold beer. He often returned to Italy to enjoy his heritage and to reminisce with his closest friend, cousin, brother, Dino Mercante. Corradino’s greatest pleasure and a joy that nothing could surpass, was his three grandchildren. As children, he would steal them for a day, or a weekend trip. As the children grew, he enjoyed them even more, doing what he did best, talking about his life, giving lots of advice and hanging on their every word. Later he enjoyed being with his great-grandchildren and it allowed him to feel young again.
Corradino will be lovingly remembered by Judy Cyr, Mark and Cathy McEwan, Pauline McEwan, and Justine Arsenault.
A very special thank you to Shannon Wood and Dr. Robert Spadafora for their incredible support and compassion. Also a thank you to Dr. Burke and his staff at the Guelph Satellite Renal Clinic and Bayshore.
A visitation will take place on Monday, June 12th from 6:00 – 8:00 at the Dublin St. Location (252 Dublin St., Guelph). A visitation will also take place on Tuesday, June 13th from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. A Funeral Service to follow in the chapel followed by burial at Marymount.
