As a child, Richie enjoyed playing baseball for Harrisburg Little League and Pony League, riding scooters, causing raucous and playing Ozzy loud on his boom box - every boys dream. He was a graduate of Grove City High School, class of 1984. After high school, he along with his lifelong friend Donny (Kelly) Martin went off to “play” school at THE Ohio State University where he studied Sports Management. Richie made a pledge to the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity on Iuka Avenue making new life long friends. Phi Delt for life! Richie held many jobs during his college years working as a maintenance guy at OSU, a bartender at Presley’s a local campus bar, worked as an assistant to the Athletic Director at the Athletic Club of Columbus meeting lifelong friends, running a bar restaurant with Brian Gibson meeting more lifelong friends. Richie ended up at Shaffer Services in 1999. Richie took this job as a temporary job but ended up there for 25 years. He held many positions at Shaffer and moved up the rank to Business Development. Richie not only met many more lifelong friends Andy Shaffer, Dave Baird, among others while working there, he ended up meeting the love of his life, Sommer in 2000. Richie and Sommer married on May 1, 2004. Kentucky Derby Day that year! Richie loved horse racing, you could find him at Scioto Downs or Beaulah Park placing a bet or taking a bet. That led to him and Sommer owning harness and thoroughbred race horses. Richie had so many wonderful hobbies aside from horse racing. He enjoyed duck hunting with his friend Tim Koethke, deer hunting with his friends Brooks Young and Doug Stead, he loved going antiquing with his wife, Sommer and his parents, Barb and Dick. Richie and Sommer ended up owning and operating an antique store in Circleville for a couple years. Richie also loved working out in the yard tending to his garden, his hosta’s. Richie loved playing in the Medalist dart league with his lifelong friends, Jeff Northcutt, Steve Starrett, and Steve Allmon. He was a very active and adventurous man. But his main focus in life was his little girl, Madison. From the time she was born, Richie was wrapped around her finger. She was his life! He always tried to do right by her. As Madison grew older and getting more involved in Volleyball, Richie’s hobbies were put last to travel every weekend to a tournament to watch his little girl play. He was her biggest fan!
