Harvey Hohlfeldt

Harvey lived a very long and productive life. Born April 19, 1921 in Detroit, MI, he was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and mentor to all. He lived his entire life on the eastside of Detroit and was successful at everything he did. He entered the Army-Air Force in 1945. Upon return to civilian life he started as a home builder, repaired TV's and radios, then manufacturer's representative. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in both Mechanical Engineering (1947) and Electrical Engineering (1949) from Detroit Tech (later known as Lawrence Institute of Technology). He was a voracious reader that allowed him to continuously read an unbelievable number of books and periodicals. Harvey had three sons that continued the Eastside tradition as they progressed through life. He married his wife Kaye Marie (nee Thompson) and built their dream house in 1970. He started Northern Industrial Mfg. Corp in 1978 and it has been built into an award-winning supplier to the automotive industry. He was a longtime member of the Engineering Society of Detroit and Society of Automotive Engineers. He enjoyed giving back to the community as he recently received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary Club International for "significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world." He also was associated with Disabled American Veterans, St. John Hospital Guild, US Power Squadron and Grosse Pointe Power Squadron. Harvey was an avid hunter (duck, deer, and small game), boater, and fisherman. He spent the majority of his time with his wife Kaye where he is most comfortable, on the water. Whether on our beloved Lake St. Clair, in Georgian Bay Ontario, or on the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida Keys, he loved spending time on and around water. He was a Gold Star member of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, The Old Club, and Clinton River Boat Club. In 1968, he designed and built a 42' Aluminum Chris Craft Roamer in Holland, Michigan. The "Heidi," as she was well known, was cared for and maintained by him until 2016 (48 years) when she was purchased by Tom and Kim Jamison from Traverse City and is in the process of being completely restored. He is survived by his wife Kaye, sons David Lee (Betsy) and Dale Allen (Nancy), grandchildren Jeff Allen (Molly), Dayna Rose Dehlinger (Ryan), Erin, and Bradley, and great-grandchildren Rowan Dehlinger and Finn Schudlich. He was predeceased by his father Harvey E. Holfeldt, mother Myrtle (nee Paton) Hohlfeldt, sister Phyllis I. Collins and son Bruce Lee Hohlfeldt.
