Mrs. Landham, widow of the late Dr. Jackson Wiley Landham, Jr. was born in Florence, Alabama, the daughter of the late Mettauer and Julia Strickland McManus. She attended public schools in Greenville, South Carolina and served as the first female president of the student body at Greenville High School. She graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She was president of the senior class and sponsor of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Emory University. At Agnes Scott she was a member of the Blackfrairs Theater group and participated in several productions. On October 24, 1947 she married Dr. Jackson Wiley Landham, Jr.
Before moving to Griffin in 1955, Mrs. Landham and her husband lived in Miami, Florida where he was interning at Jackson Memorial Hospital and she taught school. They also lived in Germany, Atlanta, and Orlando, Florida.
Mrs. Landham was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Griffin, serving on several committees; a few being Flower, Décor, Youth and two Search committees. She also taught an adult Sunday School class for many years. Currently she was a member of the Morgan Sunday School class. She was a member and past president of the Garden Club of Griffin, and the Federated Garden Clubs, a member of the Medical Auxiliary of Spalding County, and the Utility Club of Griffin for 40 years. She was a member of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and in recent years served as a volunteer Bereavement caller for Brightmoor Hospice. In 2009 she wrote and published a book about her mother’s experiences teaching all grades in a one room school in 1918. She enjoyed working in her yard, reading, Bible study and being with her family and friends.
Mrs. Landham is survived by four children and their spouses: Jackson Wiley Landham, III (Lila) of Griffin; Susan Landham Carson (Steve) of Concord, Georgia; Robert Broughton Landham (Cindy) of Murfreesboro, TN; and James Mettauer Landham (Chris) of Carthage, NC: eight grandchildren, Jackson Wiley Landham IV (Sheryl); Lydia Landham Millerschon (Joe); Beth Carson Sydell (Jarrett); Cathi Carson Johnson (Russ); Katie Landham Moody (Grayson); Emily Landham Mahoney (Houston); J. Landham; and Rob Landham; ten great-grandchildren and several beloved cousins.
Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Landham will be held in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, Griffin, at 3:00 on Sunday, August 27, 2017 with Dr. Bill Hardee officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00 in the church parlor prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the McManus Lecture Fund at First Baptist Church, Griffin, GA; or Young Life at 215 S. 11th St., Griffin.
