Norma Guzman Hernandez passed away peacefully in her home on May 10th, 2023.
Norma was the youngest of 3 brothers and 4 sisters born to Demetrio Guzman and Albina Canlas on June 28th 1941 in Manila, Philippines.
Although she was somewhat introverted as a youth, Norma made people laugh and loved to laugh. She discovered joy in cooking and crocheting, and was very fashionable. She met Virgilio Gueverra Hernandez through her sister Dida and they married on November 11, 1965. Wanting to pursue opportunities in the states, Virgil settled down in San Francisco in 1974 while Norma stayed back with their 3 boys, Ronald, Roland, and Jon until they finally landed in Portland, Oregon in 1975 where Virgil was hired by Boeing.
Norma was a devoted mother who loved her boys unconditionally and instilled in her kids to value family, be generous and show kindness. She did what she could to help provide like pick berries, waitress and then joined Virgil at Boeing working in the plant doing various jobs. But her priority always was her kids.
Norma’s cooking in the local Filipino community was legendary. Always with a smile (with no recipe or measuring), she prepared feasts that included traditional Filipino favorites for special occasions or if you just asked her to. She found great joy in feeding people. When the grandkids came, sleepovers were frequent, rules were rare, and she spoiled them to no end.
In her later years, Norma and Virgil would frequent the casino, do some gardening, and enjoyed the weekly visits from the kids and grandkids to eat, laugh and eat some more. She spent countless hours talking with her sister Dida on the phone. Although her memory was slipping more recently, she always greeted you with a smile and a kiss on the cheek and loved having her family around. She is survived by her husband Virgil, her sons and daughter-in-laws Ron and Robin Hernandez, Roland and Andrea Hernandez, Jon and MaryBeth Hernandez, along with grandchildren Alyssa Hunter, Jacob Hernandez, Abigail Hernandez, Bailey Hernandez, Isabelle Hernandez, Adam Hernandez, sister Erlinda (Dida) Dela Rosa and great grandchild Scarlett Hunter.
A family & close friends memorial will be held on June 4, 2023 at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, Oregon. Fond memories of Norma may be shared at www.batemancarrollfunerals.com for the Hernandez family.
