Helen was born on December 4, 1913 in Remer, Minnesota and was the daughter of John and Maude (Sherif) MaKousky. She attended school in Minnesota and moved to California. She relocated to Oregon in 1943 where she resided in the Gresham Area.
On November 23, 1951, she married Jesse Berg in N. Bonneville, Washington. She worked as a homemaker and was very active with her church; Redeemer Lutheran in Gresham, where she made lap quilts for local nursing homes and volunteered with the Women’s Guild.
Helen was very active. She loved to hunt and fish and had a wonderful green thumb for gardening. She raised beautiful flowers and vegetables. She also enjoyed sewing, canning and spending the winter months in Arizona with her husband, Jesse. Helen’s family was very important to her as well. She was strong, protective, loving and caring and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Helen is survived by her son, Gary Nelson of Gresham and daughter, Phyllis Miller of Lacey, Washington along with 11 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren. Her husband, Jesse, son, Dean, daughter, Lorna, brother, Harold and sisters, Edna and Nellie all preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 11:00 am at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Gresham. Visitation will be on Friday, July 15, 2011 from 10:00 am to 5:00pm, Monday, July 18th from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Tuesday, July 19, 2011 from 10:00 am-5:00 pm at Bateman Carroll. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery. Contributions may be made in memory of Helen to the Redeemer Lutheran Women’s Guild.
